Syrian President Bashar al-Assad Sunday called upon the Arab foreign ministers to reach a mechanism for achieving a national unity among the Palestinians in their forthcoming meeting, the official SANA news agency reported.
Assad made the call in a meeting with visiting Arab League (AL)Secretary General Amr Moussa, in which the two sides discussed the upcoming Arab foreign ministers meeting scheduled later this month.
"The Arab foreign ministers have to work in their meeting to reach a mechanism for the establishment of the Palestinian national unity to guarantee the unity of the Palestinian people," added the president, renewing support and readiness to exert all possible efforts to achieve the unity.
Both sides stressed that achieving the goals of Palestinian people depends on their unity, and this necessitates that all the Palestinian factions look for common grounds rather than engaging in elements of division.
Meanwhile, Assad also expressed Syria's deep concern over the deteriorating humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip due to the Israeli siege and practices.
Assad said the Arab foreign ministers should also come up with "successful decisions and recommendations that guarantee the breaking of the Israeli siege imposed on the Palestinian people."
In a statement to reporters after the talks, Moussa reaffirmed the AL's commitment to continuously work for the national unity among the Palestinians and ending the inter-Palestinian disputes before it is too late.
Egypt put off a long-awaited Palestinians national unity dialogue originally scheduled in Cairo earlier this month after the Islamic Hamas movement announced to boycott the talks.
Since Hamas routed the Fatah forces and seized control of the Palestinian enclave of the Gaza Strip in June last year, the two rivals cracked down against each other's members and supporters in the territories they control.
