The Palestinian Authority (PA) announced on Wednesday that it would ask the Israelis to support the Arab peace initiative by publishing advertisements in Israeli daily newspapers.
Yasser Abed Rabbo, Secretary General of Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) told reporters that the PA would published advertisements in Israeli dailies starting on Thursday to convince the Israelis to accept peace with the Arabs.
The Arab Peace Initiative, which calls for a comprehensive peace between the Arabs and Israel after resolving the Palestinian cause, was approved by the Arab Summit held in Lebanon in 2002.
"Unfortunately, there is a large majority among the Israelis who know nothing about the Arab peace initiative and they never heard about it. The Arab initiative was also misinterpreted by the Israeli media," said Abed Rabbo.
He also said that "any peaceful solution should be based on ending the Israeli occupation of the Arab and Palestinian territories. After that, the Arab world would normalize its ties with the state of Israel."
Israel occupied Gaza Strip, the West Bank, Sinai Desert and the Golan Heights during the 6-day war of 1967. Israel withdrew from Sinai, following a peace deal reached with Egypt in 1979, and pulled out unilaterally from Gaza Strip in 2005.
Israel still occupies Syria's Golan Heights and parts of the West Bank, as well as east Jerusalem, which is considered by the Palestinians as the capital of their future independent Palestinian state.
