One people was killed and several others were wounded on Friday in clashes between Lebanese army troops and gunmen in Tripoli, some 80 kilometers north of Beirut, reported the state-run National News Agency.
According to the report, the clashes originally took place in the Tripoli's Bab al-Tabanneh neighborhood when the troops at a military checkpoint opened fire on a Renault car which refused to heed warnings to stop, wounding one person.
Two other occupants, who were reportedly drunk, of the car were arrested.
However, soon after the incident, angry protestors set the car on fire and blocked the highway with burning tires, while another group of troublemakers opened fire on the army checkpoint.
The army had to return fire and a man was killed and several others were wounded during the clash, said the report.
The army command confirmed the clashes in a statement, vowing not to be lenient on security violators.
It also denied earlier reports that the clashes occurred because the army troops launched a major raid in the Tripoli neighborhood. Source:Xinhua
