A Libyan ship set sail towards Gaza Strip on Wednesday, carrying aid to the residents of the besieged enclave, a Palestinian activist said.

Jamal al-Khodary, chief of Popular Committee against Gaza Siege, said the ship started its voyage from the port city of Az Zawiyah on the Mediterranean with 3,000 tons of medicine and humanitarian aid on board.

"The aid is donated by the Libyan state and its people," al-Khodary said, adding the voyage was one of a series of Arab attempts to break the Israeli blockade on Gaza Strip.

Earlier this year, several ships, with European, American and Jewish activists on board, succeeded in docking at Gaza seaport as Israel refrained from intercepting them. The journeys were chartered by the U.S.-based Free Gaza movement.

Kuwaiti and Muslim legislators also plan to reach Gaza via the sea.

Israel sealed off Gaza Strip last year after Islamic Hamas movement seized power in the territory. In June, Egypt brokered a ceasefire between Hamas and Israel to ease Gaza blockade in exchange for lull. However, the agreement was on the verge of collapse this month due to a new wave of violence.
