At least 16 people were killed and up to 33 others wounded on Monday in a suicide car bomb attack targeted Iraqi police in the volatile city of Mosul, the capital of Nineveh province, a provincial police source said.
The incident occurred when a suicide car bomber struck a joint U.S. and Iraqi police patrol in the neighborhood of Mosul al-Jadida or New Mosul in southwestern Mosul, killing 16 people and wounding 33 others, the source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.
The source said it could not tell whether the U.S. soldiers sustained any casualty, but said that most of the victims were policemen.
U.S. and Iraqi security forces immediately cordoned off the area to secure the scene, while ambulances rushed to take the victims to nearby hospitals, it added.
The province has been the scene of a major security crackdown by U.S. troops and Iraqi security forces, which was aimed at uprooting al-Qaida militants and other anti-U.S. insurgent groups.
In Baghdad, a suicide bomber and a car bomb struck policemen outside Baghdad police academy, killing 15 people and wounded 45 others.
