Jordan on Thursday strongly condemned the entry of 70 religious Jews under the protection of Israeli police to the holy Al Aqsa Mosque, the official news agency Petra reported.
"Jordan renewed its firmed stance to reject any violation to the sanctity of Islamic holy places", said Nasser Judeh, minister of State for Media Affairs and Communications.
It will ignite the feelings of Muslims and is in fact a retrogressive step in the efforts to achieve peace in the region, Judeh warned.
He urged Israel to prevent the recurrence of such behavior and called on the international community and concerned parties to act immediately and effectively to put an end to Israel's provocative behavior.
Jordan's royal Hashemite family traces their ancestry back to the Islamic prophet Muhammad, and has long posed as guardian of the Islamic faith and the holy city of Jerusalem.
Under a peace treaty Jordan concluded with Israel in 1994, the Jewish state respects the special role of Jordan in Muslim holy shrines in Jerusalem. Source:Xinhua
