Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari would hold talks with UN Secretary Council over the expiration of UN mandate of foreign troops presence in the country by the end of this year.
A Foreign Ministry statement said that Zebari, leading a high-level government delegation, left for New York on Saturday to meet with UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and members of the Security Council.
Topics of the talks will include "ending the mandate of multinational forces in Iraq this year, and to request the Security Council to protect the funds and financial assets and oil sales from any legal proceedings against it," the statement said.
It said Zebari hopes to hold a series of meetings and discussions with permanent and nonpermanent members of the Security Council to mobilize necessary support for a new draft resolution that would release Iraq from the Chapter VII of the UN Charter that recognizes Iraq's tutelage.
Chapter VII of the UN Charter sets out the UN Security Council members powers to maintain peace. It allows the Council to "determine the existence of any threat to the peace, breach of the peace, or act of aggression" and to take military and nonmilitary action to "restore international peace and security."
