At least three people were killed and up to 31 others wounded in a suicide car bomb attack on an Iraqi security checkpoint in a town west of Baghdad on Monday, local police source said.
A suicide bomber drove his explosive-laden car into a checkpoint manned by Iraqi soldiers and policemen at the main street of the town of Khan Dhari, just west of Baghdad, the source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.
The victims included both security members and civilians, the source said, adding the death toll could rise as ambulances and civilian cars were evacuating the victims to nearby medical centers.
In a separate incident, a mortar round landed on a police checkpoint at the northern entrance of the city of Fallujah, some 50 km west of Baghdad, killing a civilian and wounding five others, including three policemen, the source added.
On Dec. 4, Fallujah, one of the main cities in the western province of Anbar, was the scene of a twin suicide bomb attack that killed up to 15 people and wounded 147 others.
In September, Iraq took over security control of the Anbar province from U.S. troops in a sign of security improvement in many of the war-torn country provinces.
Anbar, the country's largest province, has been relatively calm since more than a year and a half ago after Sunni tribes and anti-U.S. insurgent groups turn up against al-Qaida in Iraq network, cooperating with the U.S. troops and Iraqi security forces.
