Anti-Syrian Lebanese Druze leader Walid Joumblat described Wednesday the establishment of diplomatic relations between Lebanon and Syria as "an achievement," after a meeting with President Michel Suleiman, local Elnashra website reported.
Joumblat stressed that Lebanon abides with the Arab League charter, and the Taef accord which stresses "special relations," with Syria.
Joumblat has been launching strong verbal attacks against Syria during the last few weeks, accusing the Bashar al-Assad regime of imposing "physical elimination" against those who oppose it.
However, pro-Syrian Druze leader Talal Arslan accused Joumblat of drawing the country back to the tensions which prevailed in early May.
On May 7, clashes broke up between pro-government and Hezbollah-led opposition supporters. The tensions were later defused by an Qatar-sponsored agreement between rival Lebanese leaders in the Qatari capital of Doha on May 21 .
