Visiting French Prime Minister Francois Fillon said here Tuesday that his country rejects Iran's possession of nuclear weapons, the Egyptian MENA news agency reported.
At a joint press conference following talks with his Egyptian counterpart Ahmed Nazef, Fillon said Iran should respect international agreements in this regard.
France has started talks with Iran "to persuade Tehran that there are other activities for harnessing the nuclear energy for peaceful purposes," Fillon was quoted as saying.
As for the regional issues, Fillon said France has been always supporting the Middle East peace process, especially that between the Palestinians and Israel.
Voicing his hope that a two-state solution would be hammered out as soon as possible, Fillon said France is offering economic assistance and seeking to ease the suffering of the Palestinians.
Fillon, who arrived here on Monday on a two-day visit to Egypt, also held talks on Tuesday with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak on means of boosting bilateral relations.
At the joint press conference, Nazef said the talks of the two sides focused on means of pushing forward the Middle East peace process and how to activate the role of the Union for the Mediterranean in regional and bilateral cooperation.
