A suicide bomber blew himself up near the convoy of a Sunni party leader during a demonstration in northern Iraqi city of Mosul on Sunday, killing at least three people and wounding 20 others, a local police source said.

A suicide bomber on a bicycle blew up his explosive belt at the vehicle of Muhammad Shakir al-Ghannam, head of the Iraqi Islamic Party in the city, the source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.

Ghannam escaped the attack unhurt because his vehicle was armored, the source said.

Ghannam was arriving at the Dawasah area in central Mosul to take part in a rally to protest the Gaza Strip bombing by Israeli aircraft, the source added.

Mosul is the capital of Nineveh province, which has been the scene of a major security crackdown by U.S. troops and Iraqi security forces, aiming at uprooting al-Qaida militants and other anti-U.S. insurgent groups.
