U.S. troops opened fire on a female Iraqi television producer at a Baghdad checkpoint and critically wounded her, a local TV station and the U.S. military said on Saturday.
A statement issued by the television of Biladi (my country) said that Hadeel Imad, 25, was seriously injured when U.S. troops opened fire on her at a checkpoint in the Jadriya neighborhood in southern Baghdad on Thursday.
The television statement condemned the incident and accused the American soldiers of being "reckless" when dealing with Iraqis' lives.
The U.S. military said in a statement that they opened fire on an Iraqi woman after she acted suspiciously and failed to respond to warnings.
"The Iraqi police and soldiers observed the woman acting erratically. MND-B (Multi-National Division - Baghdad) Soldiers fired two rounds, wounding the woman," the statement said.
The military said that the area where the incident took place has been targeted recently by car bombs and suicide attacks.
The television, which owned by former Prime Minister Ibrahim al-Jaafari, said that Imad has hearing problems and apparently couldn't hear the warning, when she left the station and was crossing the street.
The U.S. statement said that the military and Iraqi security forces are conducting a joint investigation about the incident.
The Iraqi Union of Journalists condemned the incident and said that more than 280 of its members and media workers have been killed since the U.S.-led invasion in 2003.
The Paris-based media watchdog, Reporters Without Borders, has described the dangers that face journalists in Iraq since the outbreak of the Iraq war as the bloodiest for the media since World War II.
