Egypt on Saturday night strongly condemned Israel for launching its ground operation in the Gaza Strip earlier in the evening, the official MENA news agency reported.
In a presidential statement, Egypt called on Israel to stop its attacks against Gaza "immediately," warning Israel of the consequences of sending ground troops into Gaza.
Egypt also urged the UN Security Council and the international Quartet on Mideast peace to intervene to help halt the Israeli attacks, added the statement.
In addition, the Palestinian National Authority and all Palestinian factions should "put aside their differences" and close ranks in face of the ongoing Israeli offensive, the statement urged.
Meanwhile, Egypt promised to continue efforts to "halt the Israeli attacks, restore calm, lift the Gaza siege and achieve Palestinian reconciliation."
According to earlier reports, Israeli troops entered Gaza on Saturday evening, launching ground operation against the Palestinian enclave.
Israel's ground operation started following eight days of intensive airstrikes on the coastal strip, during which at least 462 Palestinians were reportedly killed and more than 2,300 others injured.
