Egyptian intelligence chief Omar Suleiman held talks Tuesday with a delegation of the Palestinian Islamic Hamas movement to discuss ways of halting the Israeli offensive on the Palestinian enclave.

Suleiman told the delegation about Egypt's efforts and contacts with all concerned parties to end the Israeli aggression and how to deal with the ongoing crisis in the Gaza Strip, according to the Egyptian MENA news agency.

The Hamas team also briefed Suleiman on its viewpoint toward the crisis in Gaza, MENA added.

The Hamas delegation, grouping senior Hamas members Emad al-Alami and Mohamed Nasr, arrived in Egypt on Monday, for talks with Egyptian officials on the situation in the Palestinian territory.

It is the first Hamas-sent delegation to Egypt for talks on Gaza ceasefire, since Israel launched its military offensive in the Palestinian enclave in late December.

Earlier in the day, Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Abul Gheit said Egyptian officials' talks with the Hamas delegation will focus on means of reaching a ceasefire in Gaza.

Israel's military operation, aimed at retaliating for Hamas rocket attacks into Israel, has killed over 600 Palestinians and wounded more than 2,700 others during the 11 days of assault.

A six-month truce brokered by Egypt between Israel and Hamas-led Palestinian groups in Gaza expired on Dec. 19, 2008.
