Lebanese Christian Maronite bishops warned Wednesday during their monthly meeting that the fighting in Gaza could spread to Lebanon, local LBC TV station reported.
Heads of the churches of the majority Maronite Christians in Lebanon said in their statement following the meeting that the situation in Gaza could move to other neighboring countries, particularly Lebanon.
"The division in Lebanon of two rival groups is not a good signal especially when fire is burning in neighboring countries," the statement said.
The bishops in their statement called on all Lebanese people to "forget their differences and be united in face of the potential danger."
The Maronite church is a major player in Lebanon's political life. Its patriarch Mar Nasrallah Boutros Sfier is a pro-government cleric who had several stands against the opposition, especially the Christian opposition leader Michel Aoun.
Aoun, however, had asked Sfier many times in the past to concentrate on his religious task and refrain from political involvement.
