A senior official of the Palestinian Islamic Hamas movement arrived in Egypt on Saturday for talks with Egyptian mediators on a ceasefire proposal in the Gaza Strip.
Emad al-Alami, head of Hamas office in Syria, arrived here on Saturday evening and is likely to have talks with Egyptian officials on Sunday, said the Egyptian MENA news agency.
According to earlier reports, a Hamas delegation from the embattled Gaza Strip arrived in Egypt on Friday night to join the talks with Egyptian mediators on the current situation in the Palestinian enclave.
The Hamas team from Gaza, grouping three Hamas leaders, Ayman Taha, Jamal Abu Hashim and Salah el-Bardawil, crossed into Egypt via Rafah border crossing at the Egyptian-Gaza border.
Egypt has been engaged in efforts to help reach a ceasefire in Gaza, where 824 Palestinians have been reportedly killed and more than 3,500 injured since the beginning of the Israeli offensive on Dec. 27.
On Tuesday, Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak presented a three-point proposal for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza.
The Egyptian proposal calls for an immediate ceasefire for a limited period to allow for humanitarian aid to reach Gaza and give Egypt time to continue its efforts to help reach a lasting truce.
Egypt would also invite both Israel and the Palestinians for security talks and Palestinian factions for the resumption of their reconciliation talks.
On Tuesday, Egyptian intelligence chief Omar Suleiman held talks with a Hamas delegation from Syria on means of halting the Israeli offensive on the Palestinian enclave. An Israeli delegation has arrived in Cairo on Thursday to discuss the Egyptian ceasefire proposal. Source: Xinhua
