Visiting head of the U.S. Central Command Gen. David Petraeus stressed after meeting Lebanese President Michel Suleiman Tuesday that the U.S. would keep supporting Lebanon in boosting its army's capabilities, the official National News Agency (NNA) reported.

"The U.S. will keep up its defense and logistic aid, as well as the humanitarian and social aid to Lebanon," Petraeus said.

He also expressed his hope that a new cabinet could be formed soon in Lebanon, pointing to the "noticeable improvement" in Lebanese internal situation since his previous visit to Beirut last year.

The U.S. expressed reservations last month regarding its military aid to Lebanon in case the Hezbollah-led opposition won the parliamentary elections on June 7. However, the elections granted victory to the pro-western ruling majority over the Hezbollah-led opposition.

Petraeus congratulated the Lebanese president on the achievement of the elections and reiterated the U.S. support and contentment.

U.S. ambassador to Lebanon Michel Sison attended the meeting at the presidential palace.
