UN Special Coordinator for Lebanon Michael Williams on Monday night congratulated Lebanese President Michel Suleiman and the new Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Hariri on the formation of a national unity cabinet, state-run NNA news agency reported.
"The formation of a Lebanese national unity cabinet is an event which has delighted us all," Williams said.
Williams congratulated all the Lebanese political leaders and officials on the successful dialogue which culminated in the birth of a national unity cabinet, considering this a model for successful and well-intentioned cooperation that might eventually lead to political agreement.
Lebanon's five-month-long cabinet formation process came to an end on Monday night, after Saad Hariri presented the opposition-endorsed cabinet lineup proposal to Suleiman.
Williams hoped that Lebanon will commit to the full implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1701, and to all the other decrees involving Lebanon.
Resolution 1701 ended the 34-day war between Israel and Hezbollah in 2006, and reinforced the UN Interim Forces in Lebanon (UNIFIL) to conduct peacekeeping missions in south Lebanon.
