Iran's interior minister said Wednesday security agreement between Iran and Qatar serves the security of the region, the official IRNA news agency reported.

"Iranian-Qatari security pact will serve the security of the entire region," Mostafa Mohammad Najjar told reporters upon his arrival in Tehran from Doha.

Iran's interior minister and his Qatari counterpart Abdullah Bin Nasser bin Khalifa al-Thani inked a security cooperation pact in Doha on Tuesday, according to local daily Tehran Times.

Mohammad Najjar said that the security pact focuses on cooperation to combat piracy, drug smuggling, money laundering, illegal immigration and human trafficking, the IRNA report said.

The pact also aimed to neutralize plots against Iran, it added.

On Tuesday, Mohammad Najjar told reporters in Doha that such security deals will promote peace and friendship among regional nations, adding that Iran is cooperating in the area of security with Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Turkey, Syria and many other countries.

The Qatari interior minister said the signing of the security pact is an important step for increasing cooperation between Tehran and Doha, according to the daily.
