Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al- Maliki underwent a surgery at a Baghdad hospital on Wednesday, his office said on Thursday.

"Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki yesterday underwent a surgical operation by a specialized Iraqi medical team at the Medical City in Baghdad," the office said in a statement without saying what was the surgery for.

Maliki left the hospital in a "good health" and he returned to his work on Thursday, the statement said.

The surgery came as Iraqis are waiting for partial results of Sunday's parliamentary elections, in which Maliki is expected to come one of the front-runners.
