Al-Barghouthi, who was arrested in 2002 and serving a multiple life sentence, said that reaching a national reconciliation with the Islamic Hamas movement was necessary "to go out from the impasse."
"The reconciliation is the cornerstone to build a strong Palestinian position and a united Palestinian front to face aggression, settlement, the Judaization of Jerusalem and the unjust siege on Gaza," he said.
Hamas routed Fatah in 2007 and took over the Gaza Strip, and the Fatah-dominated Palestinian National Authority (PNA) remained confined to the West Bank.
In October 2009, the Hamas rejected an Egyptian reconciliation proposal and raised reservations involving security and elections.
