The Hamas, which controls the Gaza Strip, launched "an incitement campaign" against the Palestinian National Authority ( PNA) and this had contributed to the continuation of the five's detention, al-Dumairi added.

In 2007, the Hamas routed pro-Abbas forces and seized control of Gaza, leaving the PNA confined to the West Bank. The two sides were accused of cracking down their political dissidents in the two separate territories.

Over the past two days, several Hamas leaders talked to Abbas via phone to offer their condolences for the death of his brother. Observers say it is possible that Abbas took goodwill gestures towards the Hamas to prepare the atmosphere for national reconciliation.
