10 killed in clashes between tribesmen, Republican Guards in south Yemen

At least nine soldiers and a passerby were killed on Saturday in clashes between Republican Guard forces and tribal gunmen in the southern province of Taiz, local security official and witnesses told Xinhua.

Tribal gunmen attacked units of the Republican Guard forces stationed in Mikhlaf Shraab city, the heavy clashes between the two sides resulted in the killing of nine soldiers and a passerby in addition to wounding dozens of others from both sides, the official told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.

No casualties were reported among the armed tribesmen.

Sporadic gunshots could be heard across the city of al-Asadi, a local resident told Xinhua.

Shellings and heavy shootings have flared overnight in Taiz between government forces and opposition-backed armed tribesmen since last month.
