The International Criminal Police Organization, or Interpol for short, has conducted a two- day campaign in Tanzania where 166 people have been detained for alleged involvement in cross-border crimes.
Local media on Friday quoted police sources as confirming that the cross-border crimes included trafficking of illicit drugs and human beings, unlawful firearms, and stolen motor vehicles.
The Interpol, through its Southern African Regional Police Chiefs Cooperation Organization, has confiscated in Tanzania 84 cars connected to illegal importation.
Peter Kivuyo, deputy commissioner of police in Tanzania, told local media that 50 cars were uncovered stolen cars, 15 of them had falsified chassis numbers and 19 others had false documentation.
The Interpol, along with police troops from Tanzania, has also seized heroin, cocaine, cannabis sativa and khat in various forms and quantities.
The international police institution has conducted similar campaigns in Zambia, Malawei, Mauritius and South Africa before coming to Tanzania.
