Egypt voiced its keenness on Friday to support the reconstruction and development of southern Sudan in various fields such as electricity, education, health, irrigation and water resources, the official MENA news agency reported.

Egypt was building three schools in three cities in southern Sudan, which came as part of projects Egypt is executing to enhance development and reconstruction in the region, spokesman for the Egyptian Foreign Ministry Hossam Zaki was quoted as saying.

Within the framework of supporting education projects in Sudan, Egypt had offered 300 scholarships for students form southern Sudan, Zaki said, adding that some 173 students have already arrived in Cairo.

Earlier on Wednesday, Egypt reiterated its concern over the crisis in the Sudanese government aroused by a former southern rebel movement's suspension of its participation in the government.

Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Abul Gheit and intelligence chief Omar Suleiman paid a short visit Wednesday to Juba, capital of southern Sudan, where they held talks with Sudanese First Vice President and Chairman of the former rebel Sudan People's Liberation Movement (SPLM) Salva Kiir Mayardit.

In addition, Abul Gheit and Suleiman delivered a message by Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak to Sudanese President Omer al- Bashir during their meeting in Khartoum in a bid to mediate between the two sides of the Sudanese political crisis.
