The Sudanese central government on Sunday accused the Sudan People's Liberation Movement (SPLM), the former rebel group in south Sudan, of building up military forces along boundaries between south and north Sudan.
"The SPLM is mobilizing its forces and gathering them on the north-south boundaries," Sudanese Vice President Ali Osman Mohammed Taha told a press conference.
He urged the SPLM to restrain itself, abstain from sending signals of war and commit itself to the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) it signed with the central government in 2005.
Taha reiterated the commitment of the ruling National Congress Party (NCP) to the 2005 CPA, saying, "we are concerned with implementing the Comprehensive Peace Agreement and finding solutions for all the pending issues."
"There are no justifications for the SPLM's decision," Taha said, adding that all the issues were under discussion.
"The NCP is not ready to go back to the war because we know the meaning of the war and destruction," Taha asserted.
The SPLM decided on Oct. 11 to withhold the participation of the movement's ministers in the central government and freeze the partnership between the SPLM and the NCP led by Sudanese President Omer al-Bashir until pending issues between them were settled.
Last Thursday, al-Bashir and SPLM leader Salva Kiir Mayardit held their first meeting in Khartoum without tangible results but agreed to hold more talks on the current political crisis.
On Saturday, the pro-NCP Sudanese Media Center reported that the SPLM troops had occupied Al-Kuwaik town located south of the White Nile.
It quoted an unidentified military source as saying that SPLM forces supported by tanks and vehicles were on the offensive to take over some more cities in the region.
The source said that the SPLM was massing troops on the eastern bank of the White Nile River in preparation for an attack on Al- Tboon area bordering the states of Sinnar, White Nile and Upper Nile.
Ali Tamim Fartag, Sudanese presidential advisor and deputy chairman of NCP's southern Sudan sector, told the official SUNA news agency that SPLM members had seized the NCP premises in Northern and Western Bahr al-Ghazal States.
