An employee of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has been killed during fighting in Sudan's Darfur region, the Geneva-based humanitarian organization said on Tuesday.
The 45-year-old Sudanese national was killed on Feb. 8 near Seleia, West Darfur, and the exact circumstances of the tragic event remain unclear, the agency said in a statement.
The ICRC said it was shocked by the news of this death, and it was trying to send a delegation to Seleia, as soon as security conditions permit, to seek further clarification of the event.
"The ICRC condemns all attacks on humanitarian workers, and reminds all parties concerned that international humanitarian law requires them to respect and protect personnel carrying out relief work," the statement said.
