The UN Security Council demanded on Thursday that armed groups and militias in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) lay down their arms.
Unanimously adopting a resolution, the council said it was "gravely concerned" about the continued presence of armed groups and militias in eastern DRC, which "perpetuate a climate of insecurity in the whole region."
The Security Council demanded that their members immediately lay down their arms and turn themselves in to Congolese and United Nations Mission authorities for disarmament, demobilization, repatriation, resettlement and reintegration.
The council also demanded that Rwandan armed groups operating in the area immediately stop recruiting and using children, release all children associated with them and halt gender-based violence, particularly rape and other forms of sexual abuse, stressing that those responsible must be brought to justice.
