John Holmes, the Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs, viewed on Tuesday the end to violence and concrete steps towards a political settlement as the way to peace in Darfur.
Holmes told the Security Council that the international community has not been able to find a lasting solution to the suffering of the millions of men, women and children in Darfur.
Further progress in the deployment of the UN-AU joint operation in Darfur will help, he said, but only an end to all violence and concrete steps towards a political settlement will make the fundamental difference needed, as the rebel movements themselves above all need to recognize.
The UN chief for humanitarian affairs added that in the absence of any real progress towards a solution, profound human suffering will continue to grow in Darfur.
