A Somali militant group vowed to avenge the killing of its commander in a U.S. air strike, according to a statement posted on a website on Thursday.
Militants in Somalia would "exact revenge from America," said the statement whose authenticity could not be verified.
Four planes launched an air strike in Somalia Wednesday night, killing Abu Mohsen al-Ansari (Sheikh Adam Hashi Ayro), Sheik Muqtar Robow, spokesman for the Islamist al-Shabab militia, said Thursday.
The Pentagon confirmed an attack on an Al Qaida military leader, but did not give more details.
Officials in Somalia's transitional government said Ayro was trained in Afghanistan before the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks and headed al-Qaida's cell in Somalia.
Ayro, who survived a U.S. air strike in 2007, was thought by security experts to be leading an insurgency that has killed thousands of people since last year.
The United States has put the al-Shabab insurgent group on terror blacklist.
