Former rebels in western Sudan's Darfur region on Monday announced a suspension of their anticipation in the government in protest against what they called a "procrastination" of implementing the peace agreement.
Mini Arkou Minawi, who was appointed as senior presidential assistant after signing the Darfur Peace Agreement (DPA) with the government in 2006 as leader of the former rebel Minawi faction of the Sudan Liberation Movement (SLM), made the announcement at a press conference he held on the second anniversary of the DPA's signing.
He said the SLM as well as other rebel movements which had signed the DPA "suspended from now on their participation in the government on the central and local levels," expressing his "resentment over the procrastination of implementing the DPA."
The former rebel leader held the ruling National Congress Party(CPA) led by President Omer al-Bashir responsible for the delay of implementing a number of items of the peace agreement.
He also accused Nafie Ali Nafie, presidential assistant and the government's chief negotiator for the Darfur file of causing the delay.
"The most important item which has been implemented until now was the security arrangements, but other items have not been implemented," Minawi noted, adding that the exclusion of the DPA from the country's transitional constitution was "a big breach" of the peace agreement.
Minawi's faction is the most important one among the Darfur rebel groups which have signed the DPA, while other rebel movements, which amount to more than two dozens, have refused the deal mediated by the African Union (AU), demanding more compromises from the government.
In spite of efforts by the AU and other international mediators, no major progress has been achieved in the Darfur peace process after the signing the DPA.
