The Sudanese government on Monday reiterated its determination to implement a peace deal it signed with some rebel groups in Darfur two years ago, admitting that a successful implementation needs more assistance.

"We are determined to continue the implementation of the Darfur Peace Agreement (DPA) in order to achieve security and stability for the interests of the Darfurian people," said Sudanese presidential assistant Nafie Ali Nafie, who is also chief negotiator of the government for peace talks with rebels in the conflict-torn western region of Darfur.

He told reporters that security and stability would have been realized in Darfur if all the Darfur rebel groups signed the DPA and the regional and international parties provided all the support and assistance they promised at the time when the peace agreement was signed.

Nafie made the remarks shortly after the former Darfur rebels who signed the DPA with the government in Abuja, Nigeria, on May 5,2006, announced suspension of their participation in the government in protest against what they called a "procrastination" of implementing the peace agreement.

Mini Arkou Minawi, leader of the former rebel Sudan Liberation Movement (SLM)-Minawi Faction, who was appointed as a senior presidential assistant after signing the DPA, made the announcement at a press conference on the second anniversary of the DPA's signing.

He said his SLM faction as well as other rebel movements which had signed the DPA "suspended from now their participation in the government on the central and local levels," expressing his "resentment over the procrastination of implementing the DPA."

Minawi's SLM faction is the most important one among the Darfur rebel groups which have signed the DPA, while other rebel groups, which amount to more than two dozens, have refused the deal mediated by the African Union, demanding more compromises from the government.

Nafie, however, said some positive developments had been achieved since the signing of the DPA, calling on Minawi and other former rebels who had joined the government to make an objective assessment of the DPA's implementation.

He said a high committee for Darfur, which is chaired by Sudanese President Omer al-Bashir, would hold a meeting soon to discuss suggestions handed over by the transitional authorities in Darfur headed by Minawi for the implementation of the DPA.
