Forty-two people have been killed and over 16,000 displaced in the recent xenophobic attacks in South Africa's richest Gauteng Province, police said on Wednesday.

Provincial spokesman Govindsamy Mariemuthoo said 400 arrests had been made.

The violence, which started in Alexandra, north of Johannesburg, has spread across Gauteng.

By Wednesday, it had spread to Durban, Kwa Zulu-Natal and townships in Mpumalanga.
