Xenophobic attacks were a "calculated" effort by people who were against Africans living in peace, the Van Wanati Traditional Leaders of South Africa said on Thursday.
In a statement, member of the Mhinga traditional council Hosi Shilungwa Mhinga II said the leaders strongly condemned and regretted over the recent spate of xenophobic attacks, the South African Press Association reported.
"It is our belief that the recent continuous killing and assaulting of Africans by fellow Africans is a calculated effort by people who are against Africans living in peace and developing their hard-earned democracy and their continent," he said.
The council called on communities to identify and isolate the perpetrators and hand them over to the police.
It also called on the criminal justice system to ensure that the rule of law was upheld and seen to be applied.
"Furthermore, we call upon the Department of Home Affairs to ensure that human rights are upheld in every dealings with our foreign brothers and sisters," he said, adding that rural development also needed to be fast tracked to alleviate the conditions of shack dwellers in urban areas.
Africa belonged to all Africans and the boundaries that divided them were drawn by colonial governments without consultation. However, colonial power and apartheid had been destroyed and defeated by Africans working together and supporting one another, the council said.
