The U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM) will soon replace the U.S.' European Command in coordinating military-related actions with its African partners, the U.S. embassy in Morocco said here Thursday.
The embassy communique was released as General William Ward, AFRICOM's first commander, paid a visit to Morocco from May 28-29.Ward planned to discuss joint military issues with Morocco's top officials, the embassy said.
The fledgling AFRICOM, to be launched officially this October, will play a coordination role with Morocco and other African countries, according to the release.
It will mainly provide African countries and regional organizations an integrated coordination program supervised by the Pentagon, aimed at helping these countries meet security and development needs, the release said.
The command, based in Stuttgart, Germany is expected to remain in Europe for several years, before African countries agree to host its regional offices.
