A large percentage of amnesty applications received to date were from ordinary criminals in South Africa, the SA Multi-party Reference Group said on Saturday.
"We have received a number of applications and a large percentage of those have come from common criminals, claiming that their murders, robberies and other crimes were politically motivated," the South African Press Association quoted Chairman Tertius Delport as saying.
President Thabo Mbeki announced the window of application for pardons in November last year for people convicted of political offenses before June 16, 1999.
People who were denied amnesty by the Truth Commission cannot apply.
"We cannot confirm the number of applications that we have received thus far, or the percentage that would be considered for amnesty," Delport said. Source: Xinhua
