The Zambian government threatened here Wednesday to deregister chiefs advocating acts of violence.

Local Government and Housing Minister Sylvia Masebo said some traditional leaders have been issuing statements that can lead to anarchy, if left unchecked.

She said the government is concerned over the ongoing land wrangle between Chief Shakumbila of the Lala in Central province and Chieftainess Nkomeshya of the Soli people in Lusaka province.

Masebo said the police service is on high alert to deal with anyone perpetrating violence.

The minister told the press that it is unfortunate the two chiefs are resolving their differences through the press when there are other channels available.

She said that officers from the Surveyor General's office are currently studying maps to ascertain the exact boundaries of the two chiefdoms, and that their findings will be made public once the exercise is complete.

Chiefs Shakumbila and Nkomeshya have recently been involved in a land dispute surrounding the exact boundaries of their chiefdoms.

The two traditional leaders have also exchanged threats in the press in the last two days.
