Uganda will have a 35,000-seat stadium constructed in Lira district under the auspices of the Olympic Solidarity, local media reported.
The stadium, which would be the second biggest in Uganda after Namboole National Stadium, is a replacement for the Akii-Bua memorial arena.
District sports officer Leo Alani was quoted by Daily Monitor saying that the land on which Akii-Bua Memorial stadium sits has been allocated to Lira Referral Hospital for expansion purposes.
"The construction would have started some time back but we didn't have enough land. But we have been allocated the Lira Airfield, just 300m away from Akii-Bua Memorial and that's where the stadium is to be constructed," said Alani.
Alani, who attributed the declining level of sports in the northern district to the LRA insurgency, added that the airfield would be shifted to another location, about two kilometers from the town.
