Egypt is always keen on exerting efforts for boosting inter-African relations, Foreign Minister Ahmed Abul Gheit said Monday ahead of an upcoming African Union (AU) summit which is to be held in Egypt.

Africa has always been in the focus of the Egyptian foreign policy and diplomacy, Abul Gheit told Egyptian official MENA news agency, adding African countries are the natural extension of Egypt's national security.

Egypt's hosting of the AU summit, which was scheduled to be held in the Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh later this month, came as part of Egypt's efforts for boosting inter-African ties, said Abul Gheit.

The international food crisis, the issue of water and health care status in the African countries will top the agenda of the AU summit, he added.

Besides, African leaders will discuss topics such as climate change, desertification and decrease of crop productivity in the continent.

The security and political situation in Africa is also one of the most important priorities for the African summit to deal with, said Abul Gheit, noting establishing peace and security in the continent is the cornerstone for the development efforts.

With the theme of "Meeting the Millennium Development Goals on Water and Sanitation," the AU summit will attract more than 50 African leaders.
