The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) said Wednesday it will support the reintegration of 180,000 Sudanese ex-combatants as they return to civilian life after the long-running civil war in the country.
Under a deal signed between Sudan's national unity government and the government of Southern Sudan on Wednesday, the ex-combatants will receive social, economic and psychological support as they make the transition back into civilian life and begin anew in their communities.
The UNDP Associate Administrator Ad Melkert welcomed the deal, saying the reintegration initiative, as an important component of the 2005 Comprehensive Peace Agreement, reflected Sudan's commitment to the peace process.
"The dividends of peace are long overdue. Employment generation and re-integration of former combatants is key to this process," he said.
Ameerah Haq, UNDP Resident Representative in Sudan, said the reintegration program will complement existing government and UN programming that focuses on building peace at the community level.
