The foreign ministerial meeting of the African Union (AU) Executive Council opened here on Friday ahead of the upcoming AU Summit to discuss political, economic, social and cultural matters.
Foreign ministers or representatives from the 53 AU members are expected to tackle on peace and security, the progress of political and economic integration and progress towards achieving the Millennium Development Goals in Africa, as well as human and people's Rights, legal and health issues in the continent, according to the meeting agenda.
They will also tackle the on-going Doha Round Negotiations in the World Trade Organization (WTO), high food prices and food insecurity, as well as hosting country Egypt's proposals on agricultural development and reduction of food prices, the UN-AU cooperation and Afro-Arab Cooperation.
The situation in the Middle East and the Palestinian territories is also top on the agenda of the AU foreign ministers meeting.
Egyptian foreign minister Ahmed Abul Gheit is set to make welcoming remarks at the opening ceremony, followed by statements from AU Commission Chairperson Jean Ping, Executive Secretary of the UN Economic Commission for Africa Abdulie Janneh and Bernard Membe, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Tanzania and Chairperson of the Executive Council, the AU Division of Communication and Information said in a press release.
Under the summit theme "Meeting the Millennium Development Goals on Water and Sanitation", the 11th AU Summit is scheduled on June 30 to July 1 in the Egyptian Red Sea Resort Sharm El- Sheikh.
