Secretary General of the Arab League (AL) Amr Moussa on Monday called for closer cooperation between Arab and African countries, saying the AL and the African Union (AU) share common interests.

"Food, energy and water issues are very important especially to developing nations, and we need to reach unified stances in confronting these challenges," Moussa said during the 11th AU summit which opened in Egypt's Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh earlier on Monday.

Joint stances and action should never be hidden or overlooked, Moussa said, adding that "without Arab-African cooperation everyone will lose."

Addressing the summit meeting, Moussa welcomed Egypt's initiative to resume an Arab-African summit and called for holding such summit soon.

He also appealed to the AL and the AU to reach an agreement to facilitate and better protect investments in their member states, noting that it is necessary to activate cooperation and pave the way for holding a summit.

Under the theme of "Meeting the Millennium Development Goals on Water and Sanitation," the two-day AU summit gathers heads of state and government or representatives of 53 AU members.
