Zambian Vice President Rupiah Banda said on Monday that Zambian President Levy Mwanawasa suffered a stroke.
In a statement released here, Banda however described Mwanawasa's condition as stable. He urged the nation to pray for the president for a quick recovery.
Foreign Minister Kabinga Pande said on Sunday in a statement in Egypt that Mwanawasa was hospitalized at Sharm EL Sheikh International Hospital in Egypt after he developed high blood pressure.
Pande told Zambia News and Information Services in a statement on Sunday night, "I wish to inform the nation that today, June 29,his excellency the President of the Republic of Zambia, Dr. Patrick Levy Mwanawasa, has been admitted to the Sharm EL Sheikh International Hospital for high blood pressure."
The minister said the nation would be updated on the condition of the president from time to time.
Mwanawasa is in Egypt to attend the 11th African Union summit in the resort city of Sharm EL Sheikh.
