Nigeria's federal government Monday in Abuja asked for 50 million U.S dollars from the World Bank to improve the health sector, according to the News Agency of Nigeria.

Hassan Lawal, the minister overseeing the Health Ministry, made the request at a meeting of World Bank assisted Health Systems Development Project (HSDP11) with State Commissioners of Health.

The minister explained that the money was needed to achieve the health related goals of the Millennium Development by 2015.

Lawal noted the earlier pledge by the bank to give 50 million dollars for the health sector in 2008 fell short of the 100 million U.S dollars request made to it.

He said the request was in accordance with the resolutions of the 50th meeting of the National Council on Health held in January2007.

The resolution stressed the need to ensure the completion of ongoing projects and sustainability of priority programs.
