Osman Ali Ahmed, head of the Somalia office of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), on Sunday was killed by unknown gunmen in the Somali capital, Mogadishu, local media reports.
Ahmed was attacked as he left a mosque near his home in the south of the city and later died in the field hospital of the Africa Union peacekeeping forces.
The attackers' motivation is not clear and no groups or individuals has so far claimed responsibility for the incident.
Somali transitional government officials were not immediately available for comment.
This is the second attack against UN aid workers in Somalia in last ten days.
Two foreigners and a Somali national working for the UN mine cleaning agency, Mine Action, were abducted by Islamist insurgents in the central region of Bakool on July 28. They were released hours later following the intervention of local elders.
Insurgents, who are opposed to the Somali transitional government and the presence of foreign forces in Somalia, have launched near daily attacks on government forces and foreign troops in Somalia since early 2007.
Ethiopian troops crossed over to Somalia in late 2006 to assist Somali transitional government topple an Islamist administration in south and central Somalia.
