The Egyptian Foreign Ministry on Monday summoned a senior Iranian diplomat in Cairo over an Iranian film on the assassination of late Egyptian President Anwar Sadat, the official MENA news agency reported.
Egypt's Assistant Foreign Minister for Asian Affairs Tamer Khalil called in Seyyed Hossein Rajabi, head of the Iranian interests section in Cairo, a well-placed source was quoted as saying on condition of anonymity.
Khalil made a protest during the meeting with the Iranian envoy, saying the movie "insults the relations between the two countries."
The movie shows that Iran "is not aware of the Egyptian sensitivities," said Khalil, adding the film would affect any positive development in bilateral relations.
According to a report by The Egyptian Gazette on Sunday, the family of late President Sadat has threatened to sue the Iranian producers of the documentary film, which was said to describe the assassination of Sadat in 1981 as "the killing of a traitor by a martyr."
The Iranian film "Assassination of a Pharaoh" has been screened on Iranian TV, Egypt's independent newspaper Al-Masry Al-Youm reported on Saturday.
Iran and Egypt currently only have interest sections in each other country after Iran cut the ties in 1980 in protest against Egypt's recognition of Israel.
