Nigeria's Vice President Goodluck Jonathan Wednesday in Abuja frowned at the high GSM tariff charged by telephone operators in the country, urging them to reduce fees to affordable level for average people, according to the News Agency of Nigeria.

Jonathan was quoted as telling visiting Chief Executive Officer of Vodafone, UK, Paul Donovan that communication through mobile handset was becoming too expensive in spite of the huge market opportunities for operators in the country.

He said the successes recorded in the sector as a result of government's reform programs were not being felt by the people, due to high prices.

The vice president advocated for the resuscitation of land line telephone services, to bring down the rates of GSM and relevant telecommunications services.

He expressed the Nigerian federal government's disappointment over the performance of Nigerian Telecommunications, noting that it was constitute as a national embarrassment.

Donovan expressed the readiness of his company to partner with the Nigeria in developing and transforming the country's telecommunications sector, said the report.

Vodafone, a leading international telecom operator in West Africa, had announced to acquire 70 percent ownership of Ghana's Telecommunications Company last month. It is now exploring Nigerian market in full swing, the report said.
