South Africa on Thursday called for further dialogue in Zimbabwe before the UN Security Council votes on whether to impose sanctions on Zimbabwe,

The resolution of the African Union (AU) summit held in Sharm el-Sheikh (in Egypt) earlier this month supported the call for a Zimbabwean government of national unity, a South African government official said.

"It urged the parties to get into a dialogue as soon as possible... South Africa of course is hoping that (a) resolution can be implemented as soon as possible so that there can be a government of national unity," the official added.

The AU indicated that nothing should be done that would negatively affect negotiations in Zimbabwe.
