Thousands of protesters chanted slogans against the United States in massive marches in Khartoum Sunday after reports that the International Criminal Court (ICC) may seek to arrest Sudan's president for alleged war crimes.
The Sudanese trade union federation organized the rally which brought the traffic down in the capital. The Sudanese authorities tightened security measures around most embassies in the capital Khartoum.
Sudan has said the ICC move against its top officials could undermine attempt to end the conflict in Darfur.
Some officials expressed concern over the move as it could trigger a military response by the Sudanese forces in Darfur against some UN sites in the western Sudanese region.
Darfur rebel groups may take field steps against the central government like the attack carried by one of these group on the capital in May, they said.
Sudanese officials said Khartoum will demand support from Russia, China and African countries in the United Nations to foil the ICC move.
The Sudanese Foreign Ministry has summoned ambassadors in Khartoum to warn them of the seriousness of the ICC move.
The Washington Post on Friday quoted UN officials and diplomats as saying that the ICC prosecutor would charge Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir with alleged genocide and crimes against humanity next Monday.
The Arab League is in consultation with Arab foreign ministers to hold an emergency meeting on the disputes between Sudan and the ICC.
