The death toll in stampedes in job fairs sponsored by the Nigerian immigration service has exceeded 30, local press reported Monday.
The incidents occurred Saturday as Nigeria's 36 provincial capitals held job fairs that attracted over 100,000 job seekers, many of whom were university and college graduates, for some 1,000positions.
Reports said that five applicants died in Anambra state, seven in Abia, nine in northwestern Kaduna state, and four in Asaba, capital of the southern state of Delta.
With a population of 144 million, Nigeria's unemployment rate exceeded 50 percent in 2006.
